Top administrative and police authorities in Gopalganj have clarified that there is no restriction on selling beef anywhere in the district, following a localized dispute in the Jalilpar area of Muksudpur upazila.
The issue surfaced after a local meat trader, Alomgir, submitted a written application to the Deputy Commissioner seeking administrative intervention.
In his complaint, Alomgir stated that he has been selling beef near the South Jalilpar Bus Stand Jame Mosque to serve local residents. He alleged that on May 15, the Officer-in-Charge of the Sindiyaghat Police Outpost, Arong Deb, pressured him to stop. Alomgir claimed the officer made provocative remarks regarding what could be sold in the market.
However, Outpost In-Charge Arong Deb strongly denied the allegations. He explained that he visited the location following complaints from local residents and explicitly told Alomgir that beef sales are completely legal.
"I only requested him to slaughter cattle and sell the meat at a designated spot rather than directly in front of shops owned by members of the Hindu community," the officer clarified, adding that the request was made solely to maintain local communal harmony.
Gopalganj Superintendent of Police Md. Habibullah cleared up the administrative stance, saying, "There is no restriction on selling beef anywhere in Gopalganj district. Decisions regarding market regulations fall strictly under the jurisdiction of the district administration and the Executive Magistrate."
Local citizens noted that mutual respect, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence remain vital to resolving sensitive market placements and preserving long-standing communal harmony in the area.
