The Continuous torrential rainfall over the past few days has left major parts of the capital severely waterlogged, paralysing daily life and dealing a heavy blow to low-income earners. With city roads submerged and employment opportunities ground to a halt, daily wage earners have found themselves stranded at home with no source of income.
In response to this brewing humanitarian crisis, the Abbas Ali Foundation has stepped forward to support these vulnerable communities.
Under the initiative, dry food and essential grocery packages were distributed to over 250 helpless and low-income families in Ward 16 of the Capital's Kafrul Police Station area. The relief drive covered heavily affected pockets, including North Kafrul, Suruj Miah Colony, Borishailla Goli, and Hindu Para.
The distributed relief packages were carefully curated to sustain families during short-term displacement and unemployment, containing staple items such as rice and Lentils (Dal), Flattened Rice (Chira) puffed rice (Muri), Biscuits, Vermicelli (Semai), and Sugar
Speaking at the distribution site, representatives of the Abbas Ali Foundation emphasised that day labourers and daily wage earners are invariably the hardest hit during extreme weather events.
"Due to the continuous downpour, many have been unable to step out for work, pushing their families into sudden, severe hardship," a foundation spokesperson stated. "Driven by a sense of social and humanitarian responsibility, we have initiated this drive to mitigate their suffering, even if in a small way."
The foundation also issued a call to action for the private sector and civil society, urging wealthy individuals, prominent business owners, and other social organisations to come forward. They noted that collective and coordinated efforts are essential to significantly minimise the distress of affected communities during natural calamities.
For the beneficiaries, the timely assistance brought immediate relief after days of compounding anxiety.
"We haven't been able to find any work because of the rain, and we were deeply worried about how to feed the family," shared one beneficiary. "This food support has brought immense relief to us in a very difficult time."
Residents and community leaders lauded the initiative highly, calling it a timely and deeply compassionate response to a natural disaster. Expressing their gratitude, they hoped the foundation would maintain its commitment to such social welfare and humanitarian activities in the future.
