Dolly Parton the legendary country music icon, actress and philanthropist has died of cancer at the age of 80.

She passed away peacefully on Tuesday at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville with surrounded by loved ones according to a statement from her publicist.

Born into rural poverty in the Tennessee mountains, Parton rose to become a global superstar. She wrote hundreds of songs, including enduring classics like “Jolene” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You.” Her remarkable career spanned decades with generating over 100 million worldwide record sales, 10 Grammy Awards and inductions into both the Country Music and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame.

Beyond music Parton was a celebrated actress with starring in hit films such as 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias. Known for her dazzling rhinestone outfits with towering blonde wigs and self-deprecating wit, she also commanded respect as a savvy businesswoman who controlled her own publishing rights in a male-dominated industry.

Parton’s legacy extends far beyond entertainment. Her widely praised "Imagination Library" nonprofit has provided millions of free books to children globally while her Dollywood theme park heavily boosted the economy of her native Appalachian region. In 2016 she also led a major relief fund for victims of the Smoky Mountain wildfires.

Uniquely bridging generational, geographical and political divides, Parton remained universally beloved throughout her life. She is preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean who passed away in 2025.
