Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed authorities to accelerate the development of two major waste-to-energy power plants in Dhaka. Speaking at a meeting in the Bangladesh Secretariat on 12 July 2026, he emphasized the need for timely completion using the best available eco-friendly technology.
The two proposed projects, located in Aminbazar and Matuail, aim to modernize the city's municipal waste management while generating clean electricity. Aminbazar Project (Dhaka North): Operated by China's CMEC Group, the Aminbazar facility will process approximately 3,000 tonnes of municipal waste daily to generate 42.5 megawatts (MW) of electricity. The plant is scheduled to connect to the national grid by August 2028 and will continue generating power for 25 years.
Matuail Project (Dhaka South) Managed by South Korea's B&F Group, the Matuail project will process 3,000 to 3,500 tonnes of waste every day. This facility will convert waste into methane gas to produce approximately 81,000 megawatt-hours of electricity annually. Beyond electricity, the site will generate solar power and produce organic fertilizer, animal feed, and eco-friendly bricks.
To ensure these projects stay on schedule, the Prime Minister ordered an urgent inter-ministerial meeting involving the local government, power, and environment ministries. Officials noted that the swift implementation of these facilities will significantly improve Dhaka's waste management crisis and contribute to global climate change mitigation efforts.
