A wild mother elephant sustained severe injuries after falling down a steep hill in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar, on Saturday afternoon. Continuous heavy rainfall had severely weakened the terrain, causing the elephant to lose her balance and tumble 100 to 150 feet down a slope in the Sialaghona area.
The fall left her with major injuries to her stomach and legs, rendering her unable to move. The incident has sparked renewed concerns regarding wildlife safety during Bangladesh's monsoon season.
Following the accident, Forest Department personnel and Community Patrol Group (CPG) members rapidly secured the scene. A specialized medical team from the Department of Livestock was deployed and is currently providing intensive, on-site veterinary care.
Teknaf Range Officer Md. Abdur Rashid confirmed the joint rescue operation. "Saving this injured elephant is our absolute top priority. We are utilizing all available resources for her advanced treatment and rehabilitation," he stated.
Local residents noted that heavy monsoon rains and subsequent soil erosion drastically increase the risk of wildlife accidents in the steep Teknaf reserved forest. In response, the Forest Department has intensified regular forest surveillance to protect local wildlife and has urged residents to avoid unnecessary movement inside the forest areas.
