Prompt intervention by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has brought relief to residents of Nagarpur Upazila after they halted rural road construction over the use of substandard materials.
Following complaints from vigilant locals, LGED Executive Engineer Mohammad Kamruzzaman ordered the immediate removal of low-quality bricks from the site. The road is now being rebuilt in strict compliance with government quality standards.
The Tk 5.19 million initiative, funded under the IRIDP-3 project, involves upgrading a 500-meter stretch of the Chamta Mirzapur Road, via Mannan Bhuiyan Bari, with bituminous carpeting. The contract was awarded to M/s Kabir Brothers Enterprise of Gopalpur Upazila.
According to residents, the dispute began when the contractor delivered a truckload of highly inferior bricks to build the road's sub-base. Fearing the road would collapse during the first monsoon, furious locals immediately stopped the construction work and alerted higher authorities.
Upon receiving the complaint, Executive Engineer Kamruzzaman launched a quick investigation into the Chamta area project. He validated the locals' concerns, officially disqualified the substandard bricks, and ordered their immediate removal from the site. He further issued strict instructions to the contractor to resume work only with approved, high-quality materials and to maintain the original project schedule.
Following this strict directive, the contractor acknowledged the error, cleared the rejected materials, and resumed construction using approved bricks. Locals expressed immense satisfaction with the swift administrative action.
"Irregularities or the use of low-quality materials in government development work will not be tolerated under any circumstances," Kamruzzaman said.
He confirmed that the Nagarpur road is now under regular monitoring to ensure it meets 100% quality standards and opens to the public on time.
