Continuous heavy rainfall and rising river levels have submerged thousands of hectares of agricultural land in Lohagarh upazila, Narail, threatening Aman paddy and vegetable harvests.
The relentless downpour over recent days has inundated low-lying areas across 12 unions and the municipal town. Villages including Par-Mallikpur, Kola, Dighlia, and Kashipur report knee-deep water in their fields. The stagnant water has severely damaged vegetable crops, leading to immediate supply shortages and price hikes in local markets.
Marginal farmers face looming financial losses if the water does not recede promptly. "We never expected this much water accumulation from just two days of rain," said local farmers Kadu Sheikh and Tipu Sardar. "We are praying the weather improves so the water drains quickly."
The Lohagara Upazila Agricultural Extension Department is actively assessing the impact. Upazila Agriculture Officer Munmun Saha stated that prompt drainage could minimize the damage.
"Our teams are monitoring the affected zones," Saha said. "We are advising farmers on drainage solutions and alternative crops for severely flooded lands. We stand ready to provide comprehensive support to our farmers during this crisis."
Local agricultural authorities expect to release a detailed damage assessment in the coming days once on-site inspections are complete.
