Barrister Muhammad Jamiruddin Sircar, a veteran politician and former Speaker of the National Parliament, passed away early Sunday morning. He was 95 years old.
Sircar breathed his last at 4:19 am while undergoing treatment for age-related complications at the Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka. His health had been failing for some time; Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal had visited him at the hospital only hours before his death on Saturday night.
Born on December 1, 1931, in Tetulia, Panchagarh, Sircar was a distinguished legal professional and a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He served as the Speaker of Parliament from 2001 to 2009. Notably, he also served as the Acting President of Bangladesh from June to September 2002.
Throughout his career, Sircar held several prominent cabinet positions, leading the ministries of Law, Education, and Land. He was also a senior lawyer at the Bangladesh Supreme Court.
He leaves behind two sons—including current BNP MP Barrister Muhammad Nawshad Zamir—a daughter, and a host of relatives and well-wishers. His passing marks the loss of a key figure in Bangladesh's parliamentary history.
