Dhaka residents faced significant hardship on Sunday morning as heavy rainfall triggered widespread waterlogging across the capital. The downpour, which began around 5:00 AM, quickly submerged roads in low-lying areas, disrupting commutes for students and workers.
Significant flooding was reported in Mirpur, Motijheel, and Naya Paltan, where water levels reached knee to waist height. These conditions severely hindered vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement. This localized flooding is part of a larger weather pattern that has caused flash floods across Bangladesh over the past week.
The situation remains critical nationwide, particularly in the Chattogram Division, where landslides and runoff have claimed 43 lives in six days and affected nearly 867,000 people. Approximately 242 kilometers of roads in that region are currently underwater.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours in the Dhaka, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions. Authorities remain concerned that continued rain will exacerbate flooding in vulnerable urban and rural areas.
