Overnight clashes erupted between students of Daffodil International University (DIU) and City University in the Khagan area of Ashulia, Savar, reportedly over a trivial incident that escalated into widespread violence.
Authorities from both universities estimate that at least 200 students were injured in the overnight confrontation. The violence saw three City University buses set on fire and several other vehicles, including cars and a motorcycle, as well as parts of the administrative building, vandalized.
The initial incident involved a City University student spitting, which reportedly hit a DIU student passing by on a motorcycle. Although a resolution was initially reached with an apology, the situation flared up around 9:00 PM when about 50 City University students allegedly attacked a DIU student hostel. The violence escalated when DIU students retaliated, eventually entering the City University premises where the arson and major vandalism occurred.
Police, Army, and RAB personnel intervened to bring the situation under control. Syed Mizanur Rahman, Director of External Affairs at DIU, stated they are working to resolve the matter. Meanwhile, City University Proctor Professor Abu Zayed suggested the large-scale vandalism might have been planned, not just a result of a simple student fight.
As of this morning, no arrests have been made, and no case has been filed, though twelve students have been admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital.
