A video showing a suspected thief being mockingly welcomed with a flower garland in Kalia Upazila, Narail, has gone viral on social media.
The incident occurred on Friday morning in the Chhota Kalia area. By Saturday, footage of the unusual "reception" began circulating widely on Facebook.
The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Mamun Sheikh, son of Badshah Sheikh from Kunjupur, was allegedly caught fleeing with 10 kg of shrimp and a bottle of poison. Locals claim he had poisoned a local fish enclosure to catch the shrimp.
A security guard intercepted Mamun at the Chhota Kalia intersection. Upon discovery of the stolen goods, the enclosure owners and local residents gathered at the spot. In a satirical move, the crowd placed a flower garland around Mamun’s neck and recorded him confessing to the theft.
Kalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Idris Ali confirmed that Mamun is a known offender with previous theft records. "He is part of a gang targeting fish enclosures. Locals handed him over to us on Friday. A theft case has been filed, and he has been sent to jail via the court," the OC stated. Regarding the flower garland, the police official noted he was not officially aware of that specific detail.
