Speaker of the National Assembly Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram reaffirmed his lifelong commitment to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Zia family stating he never wavered despite pressure or internal party dynamics.
Speaking at a meeting with high-ranking district officials at the Bhola Circuit House on Saturday morning, the Speaker revealed that the previous regime led by Sheikh Hasina had repeatedly attempted to lure him with high-ranking positions. "The mafia leader Sheikh Hasina tried to win me over many times. Had I joined her, my position would have been second only to hers. But I told her I have no time for such greed at 80" he said.
Addressing his tenure within the BNP, Hafiz Uddin noted that although many juniors were promoted to the Standing Committee ahead of him, he remained unfazed. "My focus was always on my constituents and the National Assembly, not committee positions" he remarked.
The Speaker expressed deep gratitude to BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for appointing him to the third-highest constitutional post in the country. "I have only spoken to him twice in my life and never sought favors yet he honored me with this responsibility. I am profoundly grateful to him and the party" he added.
The meeting, presided over by Deputy Commissioner Dr. Shamim Rahman, was attended by District BNP Convener Golam Nabi Alamgir Police Superintendent Md. Shahidullah Kawsar and other senior civil and party officials.
