The "Desert Rose" scientifically known as Adenium, has become a top choice for rooftop gardeners in Faridpur due to its vibrant beauty and low maintenance.
This hardy plant, originally from the deserts of Africa, is now a profitable venture for local youth signaling a new trend in urban agriculture.
In Boalmari Upazila young entrepreneur Akash Saha has successfully transformed his 1,800-square-foot rooftop into a flourishing garden. What started six years ago with just 20 plants has grown into a collection of over 4,000 Adeniums of various colors including rare white, yellow and maroon species.
Akash chose entrepreneurship over traditional government jobs, now earns 20,000 to 22,000 BDT monthly by selling seedlings. "I wanted to invest once and reap long-term benefits" Akash said. "Unlike cut roses that wither in days, these plants live for years and require very little water and care."
Local plant enthusiasts and agriculture officials have praised the initiative. Shahaduzzaman, Deputy Director of the Faridpur Agricultural Extension Department noted that the department is supporting such entrepreneurs as rooftop gardening offers high profits with minimal space.
