The measles situation in Rajshahi has taken a turn for the worse as the death toll at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) reached 50 this year.

On Thursday, April 9th, four more children died while undergoing treatment, signaling an alarming rise in fatalities.

Hospital spokesperson Shankar K. confirmed that 27 new patients were admitted with measles symptoms within the last 24 hours. While 24 patients were discharged during the same period, 132 children remain under specialized care. To date, RMCH has treated a total of 479 patients for the virus.

The mortality rate has surged over the past week. Records show a grim timeline: Thursday (April 9): 4 deaths,Wednesday (April 8): 3 deaths, Tuesday (April 7): 1 death, Monday (April 6): 2 deaths, Sunday (April 5): 2 deaths and Saturday (April 4): 3 deaths.

Medical experts warn that children are the most vulnerable to this outbreak. Doctors urge parents to watch for high fever, skin rashes, coughing, and red eyes. Immediate hospitalization is critical, as delays significantly increase the risk of death.

Health officials are now calling for an urgent strengthening of vaccination programs and increased public awareness to contain the spread.
