A human chain was formed on Wednesday afternoon at Mohammadganj Bazar in Jagannathpur Upazila, as locals urged authorities to permit traditional bullfighting.
The demonstration, held at 3:00 PM, was organized by the local Bullfighting Implementation Committee. Led by committee president Khalis Mia Chowdhury, speakers including General Secretary Md. Rafiq Uddin and member Kamrul Hossain argued that the sport is a "centuries-old tradition of rural Bengal" enjoyed by thousands.
The committee expressed frustration over recent restrictions, noting that while they have successfully hosted events in the past, the District Commissioner has denied permission since last year. Organizers claimed they have followed all formal application procedures and pledged to maintain strict order to prevent chaos or safety issues.
However, Sunamganj District Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Ilias Mia maintained a firm stance on the matter. Speaking to reporters, he clarified that bullfighting is legally prohibited. "Everyone must obey the law," Dr. Mia stated, adding that the administration cannot authorize events that bypass legal statutes.
