Illegal soil extraction along the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Chilmari is endangering a multi-million taka protection project, local villages, and vast tracts of agricultural land.
On Monday, February 23, excavators were seen lifting soil from at least two points along the riverbank. Upon the arrival of journalists, approximately 15 to 16 trolleys quickly fled the scene.
In the Putimari Fakirervita area of Thanahat Union, influential locals are allegedly spearheading the trade. Residents claim soil is being removed from directly inside the Water Development Board’s (WDB) embankment and in front of the Brahmaputra Right Bank Protection Project. This artificial lowering of the bank significantly increases the risk of erosion even with a minor rise in water levels.
"This embankment is the only thing protecting our village," said a local resident, requesting anonymity. "If this continues, the entire area will be submerged once the monsoon begins."
While some landowners reportedly sell small amounts of soil, traders often exceed agreed-upon limits. Due to the influence of those involved, many villagers are afraid to protest.
When questioned, trolley owner Rafiqul Islam denied commercial involvement, claiming he was only moving soil from his own land for personal use.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sabuj Kumar Basak stated that several drives have already been conducted to stop the illegal practice. He added that the relevant departments are being coordinated to take stricter permanent measures.
