Police have arrested a man in connection with an alleged extortion attempt involving Tk 50 lakh and an assault on a businessman in the Khulshi area of Chattogram.
The accused, Ahmed Kabir, was arrested on Saturday afternoon (21 February), police said. The incident occurred on 18 February in the Garibullah Housing Society area of South Khulshi.
According to the case statement, the victim Mohammad Siraj, a land trader, had been facing repeated extortion demands from the accused for some time. Siraj alleged that Kabir targeted him after noticing the growth of his business. Out of fear, Siraj had earlier paid money, but the accused recently demanded Tk 50 lakh.
On the day of the incident, Siraj was leaving his home around 10:55am for Debarpar Bazaar. When he reached the parking area of the KDS building, four to five people, including Kabir, allegedly surrounded him and demanded the money, claiming he would not be allowed to do business in the city without payment.
When Siraj refused, the accused allegedly assaulted him. The complaint states that Kabir attempted to strangle the businessman and verbally abused him. As locals intervened, the attackers fled after threatening to kill Siraj and dispose of his body if the money was not paid within seven days.
Siraj later received primary treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital and filed a case with Khulshi Police Station.
Police said the main accused has been arrested based on the case, and efforts are ongoing to detain the remaining suspects. Legal action will be taken against all those found involved, subject to investigation.
