Bangladesh Open University (BOU) marked International Mother Language Day 2026 with day-long programs and deep respect for the language martyrs.
The day began at sunrise with the hoisting of the national flag at half-mast and the raising of the black flag at the university's main campus in Gazipur. The Shaheed Minar premises were decorated with traditional Alpana and linguistic festoons to honor the occasion.
At 9:00 AM, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam laid a wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar. He was accompanied by Treasurer Professor Dr. Abul Hasnat Mohd. Shamim, Registrar Professor Md. Anisur Rahman, and various school deans and faculty members.
In his address, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Obaidul Islam described February 21 as a symbol of national consciousness. "The sacrifices of 1952 established our cultural identity and inspired our journey toward independence and democracy," he stated. He urged the university community to work toward a knowledge-based, prosperous Bangladesh rooted in the values of the language movement.
Earlier in the morning, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Sayeed Ferdous also led a floral tribute with students and staff. Similar observances were held across BOU’s regional and sub-regional centers nationwide.
