Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) observed Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day on Saturday with profound respect and a series of commemorative programs.
The day began at 7:00 AM with the hoisting of the national flag at half-mast at the ‘July 36 Square.’ At 9:10 AM, students, faculty, and staff donned black badges as a symbol of mourning and strength. This was followed by a morning procession (Prabhat Pheri) led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. GKM Mostafizur Rahman, which culminated at the university’s Central Shaheed Minar for the wreath-laying ceremony.
During a discussion on the significance of the day, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mostafizur Rahman described February 21 as an "eternal source of inspiration." He highlighted that Bengali is the only language in history for which lives were sacrificed, leading to its global recognition.
The Vice-Chancellor also touched upon the current political landscape, welcoming the re-establishment of democracy following the 13th National Parliamentary elections. He extended congratulations to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the new cabinet, expressing hope for successful leadership.
He further invoked the spirit of the 1971 Liberation War, crediting the foundation of the sovereign state to the ideals born during the 1952 Language Movement. The day concluded with special prayers at the university’s central mosque for the souls of the martyrs and the nation's prosperity.
