A tragic incident of a mother being murdered by her son has taken place in Baidarapar Mollabari village of Jhalakathi Sadar upazila. The murder took place on Sunday at around 1:30 pm.
The deceased woman's name is Shefali Begum (62). The accused is Sagar (32), father is Ahmed Khan. Sagar is the youngest of three siblings. Locals allege that Sagar has been addicted to drugs and is suffering from mental illness for a long time.
Neighbor Nannu Khan, after learning about the incident, reported the matter to Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station. Locals said that Sagar often beat his mother. Abdul Khalek Khan, a resident of the neighboring house, said, "He had been torturing his mother for a long time."
Witness to the incident, Shahida Akhter, said that Sagar attacked his mother with a machete during the incident. At that time, when she screamed, people around came running and saw Shefali Begum's lifeless body lying inside the house.
Upon receiving the news, Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station OC (Investigation) Md. Belayet Hossain arrived at the scene. He said that initially a post-mortem report has been prepared and arrangements are being made to send the body for autopsy. The process of arresting the person involved in the incident and taking legal action is underway.
