The number of drug dealers and drug users is increasing day by day in Jhalakathi district. A study has shown that although the use of Phensedyl has decreased, drug users are turning to Yaba and marijuana. The District Detective Branch (DB) is active in dealing with this situation.
According to the Jhalakathi District Detective Branch, 100 people have been arrested for drug-related crimes in the last one year from January to December. The number of cases and accused has also increased significantly compared to the previous year.
DB sources said that the arrested include drug dealers, retailers, regular drug users and people carrying drugs for others.
Out of the 100 arrested, 41 were arrested in the first six months of last year, i.e. from January to June, and 59 in the last 6 months, i.e. from July to December, in various drives.
A total of 83 cases have been filed against the arrested under the Narcotics Control Act. Of these, 36 cases were filed from January to June and 47 from July to December.
In the past year, the district detective police have recovered 2,923 pieces of yaba, 19 kg of marijuana, 15 marijuana plants and 215 pieces of paedhridine injections from Jhalakathi. Of these, 1,512 pieces of yaba, 3 kg 200 grams of marijuana, 15 marijuana plants and 215 pieces of paedhridine injections were recovered from January to June. And from July to December, 1,411 pieces of yaba and 15 kg 800 grams of marijuana were recovered. The estimated market value of these recovered drugs is several lakhs of taka.
However, no phensidyl has been recovered in the district in the past year. Although phensidyl was once widely used in Jhalakathi, currently the price per bottle is about 3,500 taka, so users are turning to yaba and marijuana.
Although there are allegations that a handful of phensidyl dealers are continuing their activities on a limited scale.
On the other hand, there has also been a trend of cultivating marijuana in some areas to avoid the risk of drug transportation. On May 1 last year, DB police recovered 14 marijuana plants from a corn field in Fulhari village of Siddhakathi union of Nalchiti upazila and on April 19, one marijuana plant from a vegetable field in Purba Kanudaskathi village of Rajapur upazila.
Many victim families, guardians and common people have expressed satisfaction with the continuous campaign of DB police against drugs. They expressed hope for a stricter campaign in the coming days.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jhalokati district police's Detective Branch Md. Touhiduzzaman said, 'The Superintendent of Police does not give a single cent to those involved in drugs. On his instructions, we are working to identify phensidyl dealers based on secret information. The anti-drug campaign is going on day and night.
