A large-scale free drinking water system was inaugurated at Chattogram Medical College (CMC) Hospital on Sunday (11 January), aimed at providing safe water to thousands of patients and visitors daily.
The project, initiated by the Durbar Tarunya Foundation, includes a central plant and 40 distribution points across different floors of the hospital. Officials estimate the system can serve up to one lakh (100,000) people every day.
CMC Hospital Director Brigadier General Mohammad Taslim Uddin officially opened the plant on the ground floor of the main building. Speaking at the event, he noted that ensuring clean water for the massive daily influx of people has long been a challenge.
"This humanitarian initiative by the Durbar Tarunya Foundation will significantly improve the quality of service for patients and their families," the Director said.
The inauguration was presided over by Foundation Chairman Muhammad Abu Abid, with BNP Central Executive Committee member Md. Shamsul Alam attending as the chief guest.
Previously, visitors were often forced to buy bottled water from outside shops, sometimes at inflated prices. The new system provides purified water completely free of charge.
"Pure water is a basic need," said Muhammad Abu Abid. "Patients and their relatives often suffer without access to clean water here. This is our effort to address that struggle."
To ensure the system remains operational and hygienic, the foundation has appointed a dedicated staff member on a monthly salary basis to maintain the plant.
