Students at the Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine (ANSVM) Faculty of Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU), one of the leading higher education institutions in southern Bangladesh, are facing severe difficulties due to non-functional multimedia projectors and the absence of sound systems in classrooms.
Although the faculty enrolls 137 students second highest among the university’s eight faculties the technological facilities in classrooms remain in a highly fragile state, students allege.
Students report that veterinary education is largely technology-based, yet most projectors have been out of order for a long time. Some projectors have damaged lamps, while others have faulty circuits, making multimedia use nearly impossible in most classes. On the other hand, no classroom has a sound system, leaving students seated in the back rows unable to hear lectures clearly. During hot weather, teachers often have to turn off fans to be heard, creating an uncomfortable classroom environment.
Students claim that despite repeatedly informing the dean’s office about these issues, no effective measures have been taken. They demand immediate repair of the damaged projectors and installation of sound systems in every classroom.
Saimun Hasan, a student of the 2021–22 session of the ANSVM Faculty, said, “Veterinary education requires visual explanation of every topic. But due to the lack of projectors, teachers cannot use multimedia. We are being deprived of understanding important concepts. We need a quick solution.”
Another student of the same session, Nazmul Huda, said, “Without a sound system, lectures are not audible. If we sit at the back, we miss a lot of things. There is also no drinking water facility in two of our academic buildings. Such conditions at a university are very disappointing.”
Professor Dr. Iktiar Uddin, Registrar of the University, said, “Multimedia projectors are supplied by the ICT Cell based on requisitions. I am not aware whether a requisition has been submitted. If submitted, necessary measures will be taken promptly.”
He added, “Sound systems, drinking water, and similar academic facilities are provided only upon formal requisition from the dean’s office. Once we receive an official request, we will take action.”
Despite multiple attempts, the Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine, Professor Dr. Khondoker Jahangir Alam, could not be reached for comment.
