Jamaat mass procession in Lakshmipur, presents memorandum on 5-point demands including PR

The Lakshmipur district unit of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Sunday (October 12) held a mass procession and submitted a memorandum demanding elections under the Proportional Representation (PR) system, along with four other reforms.

The program was part of the party’s second phase of the central movement, which began with a rally in front of Lakshmipur Press Club. The procession paraded through the town’s main streets before ending with a gathering in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.

During the pre-rally address, speakers emphasized the need to hold elections under the PR system based on the July Charter, ensure justice for genocide, create a level playing field, and bring accomplices of fascism to trial.

Following the rally, a memorandum addressed to the Chief Adviser was handed over through Additional Deputy Commissioner Samrat Khisha.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Dr. Muhammad Rezaul Karim, Secretary of Dhaka North City Jamaat, said, “The July uprising of 2024 is the greatest achievement of the nation after independence. The interim government must arrange the national election in line with the July Charter.”

He added, “People have experienced different political parties in power. This time, they want to see the scale (Jamaat’s election symbol) victorious. Under the leadership of Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the nation wishes to see Jamaat represented in Parliament. The government should accept Jamaat’s five-point demand and hold the national election in February.”

Presiding over the event, District Jamaat Ameer U. M. Ruhul Amin Bhuiyan said, “The era of gaining power through questionable elections is over. The government must accept the July Charter’s legal basis, the PR system, and Jamaat’s five-point demand before holding the next election.”

Among others present were Nazir Ahmed, Naib-e-Ameer of the district unit; A.R. Hafiz Ullah, District Secretary; Faruk Hossain Nur Nabi, former district secretary; Nazmul Hasan Patwari, Ameer of Ramganj Upazila Jamaat; Maulana Nasir Uddin Mahmud, Assistant Secretary; Mohsin Kabir Murad, Momin Ullah Patwari, President of the District Labour Welfare Federation; and Abul Farah Nishan, Ameer of Lakshmipur Town Jamaat.
