A fatal clash between two rival factions of the local BNP (Bangladesh Nationalist Party) in Munshiganj Sadar upazila early Monday resulted in one man shot dead and two others, including one with bullet wounds, injured.
The deceased was identified as Arif Mir (35), a BNP activist from Chardumuria village. Arif Mir was killed, and his paternal cousin, Imran, sustained bullet wounds. Imran was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment after first aid at Munshiganj General Hospital.
This incident occurred just eight days after another BNP activist, Tuhin, was shot dead in a clash between the same two rival groups on November 2. The conflict stems from a long-standing dispute between two factions, Arif's Group: Associated with former union BNP vice-president Awlad Hossain and Kamal's Group: Associated with district BNP convening committee member Atik Mallik and current union BNP president Ohid Mollah (led locally by Shah Kamal).
The November 2 clash saw supporters of the Awlad group allegedly fire on members of the Kamal group, killing Tuhin. The latest gunfight erupted around 6 AM Monday when members of the Kamal group, who had reportedly fled the area after Tuhin's killing, attempted to return.
Locals rushed the injured to Munshiganj General Hospital, where Arif Mir was declared dead on arrival. Sadar Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC) M Saiful Alam confirmed police rushed to the scene immediately after the incident.
Additional police forces were deployed to the area to bring the tense situation under control. Locals reported that tension has been "running high" since the previous killing on November 2.
