Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) has called on the media to play a responsible role in safeguarding voting rights and raising public awareness ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election and constitutional referendum scheduled for February 12, 2026.
During a view-exchange meeting with journalists at the Bangataj Auditorium on Thursday, Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, GCC Administrator and Dhaka Divisional Commissioner, emphasized that the upcoming polls are a turning point for Bangladesh's democratic future.
The administration is currently running a month-long awareness campaign to encourage voter participation. Awareness is being spread through leaflets, billboards, and mobile video units.
To ensure transparency, all "risky" polling stations will be equipped with CCTV cameras. The administration aims to bring 100% of polling stations under camera surveillance in phases. Gazipur Deputy Commissioner and District Returning Officer Mohammad Alam Hossain assured that the administration remains strictly neutral and is prepared to handle any complaints promptly.
Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury urged journalists to act as a shield against misinformation and rumors. "Presenting truthful news is the best way to prevent unrest and misunderstanding," he stated. He noted that if the administration, election bodies, and the media work in unison, the public will not need to protest for their fundamental rights.
The session, chaired by GCC Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Sohel Hasan, allowed journalists to raise concerns regarding law and order and the flow of information during the election period. Both officials provided detailed answers, reinforcing a commitment to transparency.
