Chittagong's roads are set to feature a dedicated lane for bicycles. Bangladesh's first cycle track is being officially inaugurated in the city on Friday (October 9).
Immediately following the inauguration, this approximately 2.2-kilometer-long track will be opened to the public, creating new opportunities for safe and eco-friendly commuting while helping to reduce traffic congestion and environmental pollution.
On Thursday (October 8), Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain inspected the construction work and the preparations for the inauguration.
Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said, "We are working systematically to transform Chittagong into a modern, clean, livable, and eco-friendly city. The inauguration of Bangladesh's first cycle track marks the beginning of a new chapter in Chittagong's urban management. It is not merely a path for cycling; it symbolizes our journey towards an eco-friendly and healthy urban lifestyle."
He noted that the development of the Airport Road was carried out under the CCC's project titled 'Chittagong Airport Road Expansion and Other Physical Infrastructure Development.' Attractive footpaths have been constructed on both sides of the approximately 2.2-kilometer-long, four-lane road. A central median (mid-island) defined by curb stones has been created, and the cycle track has been built alongside a landscaped walkway. The Mayor stated, "The presence of a dedicated cycle lane will enhance rider safety and create opportunities for eco-friendly commuting within the city. At the same time, it will encourage the youth to adopt cycling, thereby promoting a healthy lifestyle."
He added, "We must encourage our younger generation to use bicycles. Creating an environment safe for cycling will boost its usage, reduce traffic congestion and pollution, and encourage citizens to lead healthy lives. Necessary initiatives will continue to be taken in the future to develop Chittagong into a bicycle-friendly city." During the visit, he inspected various sections of the track and discussed construction quality, safety measures, and accessibility for citizens with the concerned officials. During this time, he issued instructions to ensure the track is user-friendly, safe, and aesthetically pleasing.
Present during the inspection were Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Chief Executive and Secretary Mohammad Ashraful Amin, Chief Engineer Anisur Rahman, Additional Chief Engineer Borhan Uddin, Executive Engineer Ashikul Islam, Assistant Engineer Md. Ali, Chattogram Metropolitan Swechchhasebak Dal Senior Joint Convener Ziaur Rahman Zia, and the Mayor's Personal Secretary Aziz Ahmad.
