Recovery Operation Begins for Sunken Cargo Vessel in Paikgachha

A recovery operation has begun to salvage a cargo vessel that sank in the Kopotakkho River in Paikgachha, Khulna.

A diving team led by Hossain from Khulna is carrying out the recovery operation. As the river remains full during high tide, the divers are conducting the work during low tide.

According to local sources, the sand-laden cargo vessel sank after hitting a pier of the Boyalia Bridge in the Kopotakkho River at around 3pm on Saturday, October 3.

The vessel is owned by Rajab Ali Gazi of Raduli Union in Paikgachha. He said the vessel’s engine broke down after it entered the Kopotakkho River, leaving the crew unable to control it. The vessel drifted with the current before striking the bridge pier and sinking.

The cargo was carrying sand at the time of the accident.

Gazi said Tk 370,000 will be paid to diver Hossain for recovering the vessel. The recovery operation has been underway for three days, and the vessel may be brought up from the riverbed tomorrow.

Hundreds of people have gathered along both banks of the Kopotakkho River and on the bridge to watch the recovery operation. The large crowd has made the area look like a fairground.
