Power generation at the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant in Parbatipur, Dinajpur, has been completely suspended due to mechanical failures.
The plant’s third unit stopped generating electricity at 5:05am on Tuesday, October 6, after developing a mechanical problem. Earlier, the first unit was shut down at 5:50am on Monday, October 5, also due to a mechanical failure.
The plant’s second unit has remained out of operation since November 2020 because of mechanical problems.
Mohammad Abu Bakkar Siddique, chief engineer of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant, said a team of Chinese engineers from contractor Harbin International has started work to repair the mechanical faults in the two recently shut-down units.
According to the authorities, the 275-megawatt Unit 3 had been supplying around 160–170 megawatts of electricity to the national grid each day before its shutdown.
The 125-megawatt Unit 1 had been supplying around 50–55 megawatts of electricity to the national grid daily.
Meanwhile, the plant’s 125-megawatt Unit 2 has remained shut since November 2020 due to mechanical problems.
With Units 1 and 3 now offline and Unit 2 already out of operation, the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant is currently unable to generate electricity.
