Twenty-three financially disadvantaged students of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) have received Tk 3,000 each as departmental scholarships.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain handed over the scholarship money to the students during the inaugural session of a workshop titled “Pathways to Higher Education in Foreign Countries” at the conference room of the university’s Old Administrative Building on Tuesday, October 6.
Teachers and students of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems participated in the workshop.
Speaking as the chief guest, the vice-chancellor said many students aspire to pursue higher education abroad, although not all can afford to do so. He said students seeking overseas education should communicate with teachers and academic departments at foreign institutions to explore opportunities.
He noted that numerous scholarships are available for students wishing to study abroad, but many miss out because they are unaware of the opportunities.
“I believe our students are more talented than students of other countries; they only need to utilise their talent properly,” he said.
Addressing the students, Prof Dr Mosharraf Hossain advised those interested in studying abroad to pursue scholarship opportunities and set clear academic goals first.
“If you want to pursue higher education abroad, you must go on scholarships. First, you have to set a specific goal for higher education. Then you have to move forward according to that goal. Only then can you achieve success,” he said.
He also urged talented students who pursue higher education overseas to return to Bangladesh after completing their studies and apply their knowledge for the country’s benefit.
The workshop was organised by the HEAT (Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation) Sub-Project of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems.
University Treasurer Prof Dr Mohammad Imdadul Huda and Prof Dr Raju Ahmed, dean of the Faculty of Social Science, attended the event as special guests.
Dr Md Shafiqul Islam, SPM of the university’s HEAT Project, delivered the welcome address, while Prof Dr Sakhawat Hossain Sarker, former dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, chaired the workshop.
Prof Dr Md Abdul Quayum Masud, dean of the Faculty of Business Administration at Noakhali Science and Technology University, and Dr Md Habibur Rahman, assistant professor at the Institute of Agribusiness and Development at Bangladesh Agricultural University, attended the workshop as resource persons.
