Chinese tech giant Huawei has signed a major patent agreement with US chipmaker Qualcomm also marking the first 5G patent licensing deal between the two companies.
Under the agreement, Huawei will license and transfer patents to Qualcomm covering key technology sectors including computing the artificial intelligence (AI) and networking. This is the first time Huawei has transferred patents to Qualcomm in these fields with reflecting growing international recognition of Chinese innovation beyond traditional telecommunications.
As part of the transaction Qualcomm will acquire specific Huawei patents in the United States. While detailed financial terms remain confidential and patent purchases of this nature typically involve direct financial compensation to Huawei.
In a statement released on Monday, Huawei emphasized that the agreement underscores Qualcomm’s continued respect for its intellectual property and technological advancements. The company noted that it regularly uses patent transactions to share new technologies and accelerate their global adoption.
Huawei and Qualcomm have a long history of intellectual property agreements dating back to 2001. Since 2021 Huawei has consistently maintained positive net revenue from its global IP licensing activities.
