

Diploma midwife nurse Beethy Akter, 25, who was reportedly suffering from complications after her family alleged that gauze had been left inside her abdomen during a Caesarean section, died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Thursday (October 8).
She died at around 8:30am after battling various health complications for months, her husband, Md Rakibul Islam, confirmed.
Beethy was the wife of Rakibul Islam and a resident of Tamiz Uddin Mridha Para in Ward 7 of Uzanchar Union in Goalanda upazila, Rajbari.
According to her family, Beethy underwent a Caesarean section at Faridpur Medical College Hospital on May 6. The family alleged that gauze was left inside her abdomen and the incision was closed during the procedure, which they attributed to Dr Tamanna and intern doctor Aravind.
She subsequently developed various health complications. After experiencing severe pain and a deterioration in her condition, she underwent another major surgery about two months later.
She later developed serious complications involving her intestines and required treatment in an intensive care unit. Her family said she underwent multiple complex treatments, including bypass surgery.
Her health continued to deteriorate during the prolonged treatment. Her weight, which had previously been 61 kilograms, fell to just 38 kilograms during her illness.
Following the birth of her child, Beethy was also unable to hold or breastfeed her newborn for around four months because of her condition, according to the family.
Beethy eventually died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Thursday morning. Her death has cast a shadow of grief over her family and relatives.
Her family alleged that negligence by the doctors during the surgery resulted in the gauze being left inside her abdomen. However, no statement was immediately available from the doctors concerned or the hospital authorities regarding the allegation.
Goalanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Saiful Huda said he had learned of Beethy’s death and described the incident as deeply tragic.
He said the district commissioner and he had visited Beethy’s home twice to see her child, adding that those responsible should face exemplary punishment following an investigation.
