The Election Commission will announce its roadmap for Bangladesh’s local government elections on Monday (October 12), including when the elections will begin and how many phases they will be held in.
Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah disclosed the information to journalists at the Election Commission building in Agargaon on Thursday (October 8).
“There will be a commission meeting next Monday. The roadmap for the local government elections will be finalised and announced at that meeting,” Sanaullah said.
In response to a question from journalists, he said the Election Commission would hold discussions with political parties on local government elections, including Union Parishad polls. Preparations for the discussions are already underway.
The commission is also currently engaged with Nepal’s Election Commission over postal voting. A delegation from the Nepal Election Commission has held meetings with Bangladesh’s Election Commission for two days seeking technical assistance to introduce a package postal voting system.
Sanaullah said Nepal wants to introduce a voting system for expatriates similar to Bangladesh’s and is interested in receiving technical assistance on Bangladesh’s IT-supported postal voting system. The Bangladesh Election Commission currently maintains dedicated information on its IT-supported postal voting and diaspora voting systems.
The Bangladesh Election Commission also held a meeting with representatives of the European Union at 11:30am on Thursday. Various election-related issues, including the upcoming local government elections, were discussed at the meeting.
Sanaullah said a clearer picture of the detailed schedule, number of phases and which local government elections will be held first would emerge after Monday’s commission meeting.
