Switzerland advanced to the World Cup Round of 16 after delivering a clinical 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday at BC Place in Vancouver. Goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye handed the Swiss their first knockout-stage win in the tournament since 1938.
Under the tactical guidance of coach Murat Yakin, Switzerland perfectly executed a game plan to absorb early Algerian pressure and strike on the counter-attack. In the 10th minute the 20-year-old breakout star Johan Manzambi raced down the flank with squaring the ball for Embolo to tap in from close range.
Less than a minute into the second half Ndoye doubled the lead with blasting a shot from the top of the box past diving Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane.
The match featured a compelling tactical storyline, as Algeria is managed by Vladimir Petkovic who previously coached the Swiss national team from 2014 to 2021. Despite dominating the opening 10 minutes Petkovic's squad struggled to break down a disciplined Swiss five-man midfield orchestrated by Granit Xhaka.
"We couldn't underestimate Algeria and we had to be clinical. That clinical finishing made the difference today," said Embolo.
The defeat marked the end of an era for Algeria, who were making their first World Cup appearance since 2014. Following the match, 35-year-old Algerian captain Riyad Mahrez announced his retirement from international football.
"The goal was to progress and I think it was a game that was within our reach. We conceded two goals on mistakes, and at this level, we pay dearly for that," Mahrez told reporters. "It's my last appearance even with the national team. It was my last game."
Switzerland will return to Vancouver next Tuesday to face the winner of the match between Colombia and Ghana for a spot in the quarter-finals.
