Sherfane Rutherford’s unbeaten half-century and a strong spin attack helped West Indies secure their second consecutive win, beating England by 30 runs at the Wankhede Stadium.

West Indies posted 196 for 6, led by Rutherford’s 76 not out and Roston Chase’s 34. In reply, England were bowled out for 166, despite an unbeaten 43 from Sam Curran. Gudakesh Motie took 3 for 33, while Chase added 2 for 29. Adil Rashid was England’s best bowler with 2 for 16.

Despite heavy pre-match focus on their famous 2016 clashes, West Indies produced a composed and confident performance under lights. Rutherford anchored the innings with a calculated yet powerful knock, while the spinners tightened the grip during England’s chase, even in dewy conditions.

England appeared in control at several stages. West Indies slipped to 8 for 2 early, Rashid delivered a tight, wicket-taking spell, and Phil Salt’s aggressive start powered England to 67 for 1 in the powerplay.

The momentum shifted sharply once West Indies introduced spin. Motie and Chase bowled in tandem through the middle overs, sharing five wickets and choking England’s scoring. Their combined figures of 5 for 62 in eight overs broke the backbone of the chase. Akeal Hosein later added another key wicket to deepen England’s troubles.

England’s decline was summed up by Jofra Archer’s slow run-out from a direct hit by Jason Holder. Sam Curran fought on, but lacked support at the other end. The match ended with Chase taking a sharp catch at deep square leg, capping an all-round performance.

The defeat brought England’s strong recent T20 run to a halt, ending their streak of 11 wins in 12 matches, once again at the hands of a familiar World Cup rival.
