Pakistan secured an eight-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the second One-Day International (ODI) in Rawalpindi on Friday, thereby clinching the three-game series 2-0. The win came amidst a highly tense backdrop, as the match proceeded despite the Sri Lankan cricketers requesting to return home due to security concerns following the recent suicide bombing in nearby Islamabad.
The Sri Lankan team's plea for immediate departure was overruled by their board, which issued a firm directive to stay. In response, Pakistan deployed army and paramilitary forces to ensure the team's protection. Pakistan's Army Chief, Asim Munir, personally assured Sri Lankan Defence Minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon of the team's safety, allowing the tour to continue.
Chasing 289 for victory, Pakistan successfully overhauled the target with 10 balls to spare, largely thanks to a magnificent century from captain Babar Azam.
Azam anchored the chase, hitting his 20th ODI century (his first international ton in 84 innings). He shared crucial partnerships with opener Fakhar Zaman (78), who provided the early tempo, and an unbeaten 112-run stand with wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan (51 not out), who fittingly brought up his half-century late in the chase.
Sri Lanka's innings was built on solid contributions, though no player reached a century. Janith Liyanage (54) and Kamindu Mendis (44) formed the backbone with a key 73-run partnership, while Wanindu Hasaranga remained unbeaten on 37.
For Pakistan, paceman Haris Rauf and spinner Abrar Ahmed shared the bowling honors, each claiming three wickets.
The final ODI is scheduled to be played on Sunday, also in Rawalpindi, before Pakistan and Sri Lanka participate in a T20 tri-series with Zimbabwe.
