Today marks the 11th day of Ramadan, beginning the second phase of the holy month — the period of forgiveness. Islamic scholars emphasise that one of the most important acts during this time is sending blessings (Durood) upon Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
According to Islamic teachings, regularly sending blessings brings forgiveness of sins, increases Allah’s mercy, and strengthens a believer’s spiritual connection with the Prophet. It is also believed to bring benefits in both this world and the Hereafter.
Importance of Sending Blessings
The Qur’an highlights the significance of sending blessings upon the Prophet. In Surah Al-Ahzab (33:56), Allah says that He and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet and instruct believers to do the same.
Scholars explain that this command shows the high virtue of this act. Muslims who regularly send blessings upon the Prophet are considered fortunate and spiritually rewarded.
Teaching of Durood
After the revelation of this verse, the companions asked the Prophet how to send blessings properly. According to Sahih al-Bukhari, the Prophet taught them to pray: “O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad.”
Islamic teachings also emphasise including the Prophet’s family when sending blessings. Scholars say that complete Durood includes both the Prophet and his family.
Virtues Mentioned in Hadith
Several Hadith describe the rewards of sending blessings: According to Sunan an-Nasa'i, whoever sends blessings upon the Prophet once receives ten blessings from Allah, forgiveness of sins and increased spiritual status.
A narration in Jami at-Tirmidhi states that supplications are more likely to be accepted when blessings upon the Prophet are recited before and after them.
Islamic scholars throughout history — including imams, scholars and spiritual leaders — have encouraged regular recitation of Durood as a means of spiritual purification and closeness to Allah.
Practice During Ramadan
Religious scholars encourage believers to make a habit of sending blessings regularly during Ramadan with sincerity, respect and devotion. It is regarded as a simple but powerful act of worship that strengthens faith and brings inner peace.
The virtues and benefits of sending blessings are described as countless. Scholars say this practice increases good deeds, forgives sins and raises a believer’s spiritual rank.
Renowned Islamic scholar Ahmad Raza Khan also emphasised the spiritual value of sending blessings upon the Prophet and its reward in the Hereafter.
Muslims are encouraged to use the days of Ramadan to increase remembrance, seek forgiveness and strengthen their relationship with Allah through sincere acts of worship.
