The District Detective Branch (DB) has solved the double murder case of a 65-year-old woman and her 15-year-old granddaughter in Ishwardi, Pabna. Shariful Islam Sharif, 35, the victims' relative, was arrested on Saturday night and has reportedly confessed to the crime.
The victims, Sufia Khatun and ninth-grade student Jamila Akhter, lived alone in Bhabanipur village while Jamila’s father was working in Dhaka.
According to DB officials, the motive stemmed from an altercation on February 21, when Sharif attempted to harass the teenager. After being rebuked and slapped by Jamila, Sharif returned on the night of February 27.
During interrogation, Sharif stated that he initially went to the house to apologize, but a heated argument ensued. In a fit of rage, he struck Sufia Khatun with a wooden stick and subsequently attacked Jamila with a masonry tool. The suspect then dragged the teenager to a nearby field where he committed further assault before strangling her.
Local residents discovered the bodies on Saturday morning and alerted the authorities. A special DB team, led by OC Rashidul Islam, used technical surveillance and local intelligence to track down Sharif within 24 hours.
"The suspect has provided a detailed account of the events leading to the murders," stated OC Rashidul. The bodies have been sent to Pabna General Hospital for autopsy, and legal proceedings are underway.
