Iran has confirmed that its defence minister and armed forces chief were killed in a joint US-Israeli attack. According to Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Armed Forces Chief Abdul Rahim Mousavi and Defence Minister Amir Nasserzadeh were killed in strikes carried out on Saturday.
Earlier, Tehran reported that senior security official Ali Shamkhani and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Mohammad Pakpour were also killed.
IRNA said several other military commanders died in the attack. Their names will be announced later.
Iranian state media also confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Semi-official news agencies Tasnim and Fars reported the development on Sunday (March 1). State broadcaster IRIB said the supreme leader had been “martyred.”
Reuters, citing two US sources and a source familiar with the matter, reported that Khamenei was meeting senior advisers when the strikes began early Saturday. Israeli officials also said Khamenei and several top aides were killed.
The situation remains fluid, with further official statements expected.
