Nasiruddin Patwary, chief coordinator of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and a Dhaka-8 election candidate, was targeted in an egg attack during a programme in Dhaka’s Ramna area around noon on Tuesday.
The incident took place at Habibullah Bahar College at about 12:15pm, shortly after Patwary arrived to attend a “Pitha Utsob” event. Eyewitnesses said several eggs were thrown at him, forcing organisers to briefly halt the programme.
Patwary accused supporters of his rival candidate, BNP nominee Mirza Abbas, of carrying out the attack.
SM Shahriar, NCP Dhaka Metropolitan South member secretary, claimed that activists affiliated with Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal blocked their entry to the campus and disrupted the programme under the guise of a question-and-answer session.
“They gathered in advance and carried out a planned attack in front of the media, creating chaos at the venue,” Shahriar said.
This was the second such incident involving Patwary in recent days. On January 23, eggs and muddy water were thrown at him during a campaign event in Dhaka’s Siddheshwari area.
Following Tuesday’s incident, tension spread across the college campus, prompting law enforcement personnel to intervene and restore order.
Patwary later left the campus and staged a sit-in on the road opposite Shantinagar Kitchen Market. Speaking to reporters, he said students had welcomed him with flowers before the attack.
“We were attacked by JCD men. We will remain patient and peaceful until February 12,” he said, adding that if elected, he would work to make Dhaka-8 free from terrorism and extortion.
