Bangladesh's local government elections are expected to begin in phases starting in September or October 2026, following the monsoon season.
Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Advisor, Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, confirmed the schedule during a Directorate of Information press briefing on Tuesday (June 23). He was clarifying recent statements made by Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir regarding the election timeline.
Dr. Zahed explained that the government plans to complete the elections for all tiers—including union councils, municipalities, upazilas, district councils, and city corporations—within a one-year timeframe.
Addressing public confusion about this deadline, Dr. Zahed noted, "One year means from the time the elections start. Because we have many levels of local government, especially a massive number of union councils, the process naturally takes a full year."
He confirmed that if the phased voting begins in September or October 2026, the government aims to conclude all local elections nationwide by September or October 2027.
