Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not move to the official residence at State Guest House Jamuna and will continue living in his private home in Dhaka’s Gulshan.
Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Ruman confirmed the decision on Thursday (March 19), saying the prime minister prefers his current residence.
“He feels comfortable in his Gulshan home and will continue to stay there,” Ruman said, adding that the residence has been arranged accordingly since his return from London.
Tarique Rahman returned to Dhaka on December 25 last year after 17 years abroad and has since been living at his Gulshan residence.
Although Jamuna was prepared as the prime minister’s official residence by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works after his swearing-in, he has decided not to relocate.
However, Jamuna will continue to be used for official functions. Several state events, including Iftar programmes for diplomats and scholars, have already been held there.
On Eid day, the prime minister is scheduled to host a greeting programme at Jamuna from 10:00 am, where he will meet diplomats, dignitaries, and citizens from different walks of life.
The previous official residence, Ganabhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, was damaged during the student-led mass uprising on August 5, 2024, and later converted into a museum by the interim government.
During the interim period, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus used State Guest House Jamuna as his official residence.
