A group of citizens in Jhalakati has called for coordinated action to protect the environment, including rivers, trees, and wildlife.
An emergency meeting was held at Jhalakati Press Club on Thursday afternoon, bringing together people from different professions and social groups.
The meeting was chaired by retired teacher Touhid Hossain Khan and moderated by journalist Ismail Musafir.
Speakers stressed that organised efforts are essential to tackle environmental challenges such as river encroachment, illegal tree cutting, and pollution. They said a strong, active citizen platform is needed to address these issues effectively.
Leaders of the Jhalakati Press Club, including President Akkas Sikder and General Secretary A.S.M. Mahmudur Rahman Parvez, along with other members, attended the meeting.
Journalists, lawyers, teachers, students, and representatives of social organisations also participated.
At the end of the meeting, an 80-member committee was formed to work on environmental protection. The committee includes 50 executive members and 30 general members, along with an advisory panel.
Participants expressed hope that the committee will raise awareness, build public opinion, and take necessary steps to protect the environment in Jhalakati.
