Buying a good watermelon can feel like a gamble. Many shoppers end up with a pale, tasteless fruit despite their best efforts. To ensure you get a sweet, juicy melon every time, follow these seven expert tips.
1. Check for Field Spots (Ground Spots)
Look for yellowish spots on the watermelon where it rested on the ground while growing.
Large yellow spots indicate that the watermelon was allowed to ripen fully on the vine, meaning it’s likely sweet and juicy.
White or pale spots can indicate the watermelon was picked too early.
2. Test the Weight
Pick up the watermelon. A ripe watermelon should feel heavy for its size because it is full of water and juice.
If it feels light, it may be under-ripe and less sweet.
3. Listen to the Sound
Tap the watermelon gently.
Hollow, deep sound → ripe and juicy
High-pitched sound → under-ripe
Heavy, dull thud → overripe or starting to spoil
It takes practice to distinguish these sounds, but once you do, it’s very reliable.
4. Examine the Tendrils (Pods)
Look at the tendril near where the watermelon connects to the vine.
Brown and dry tendril → ripe and naturally matured
Green tendril → may have been picked too early
5. Look at the Shape
A good watermelon should be evenly shaped (round or oval).
Uneven or lopsided watermelons often indicate irregular pollination, which can affect taste and texture.
Especially important for larger watermelons.
6. Observe the Skin
Matte or slightly dull skin → ripe
Shiny skin → may be unripe
Note: Some sellers wash or polish watermelons, so consider this along with other factors.
7. Finger Measurement Test
Hold your index and middle fingers together.
Measure the width of the dark green strip between the two white stripes.
If your fingers fit comfortably in this space, the watermelon is likely ripe, sweet, and juicy.
