Argentinian President Javier Milei’s political party, La Libertad Avanza (LLA), achieved a major victory in the recent parliamentary elections, securing more than half of the seats contested in both the lower and upper houses.
According to the Election Commission, LLA candidates won 6 seats in the lower house and 13 seats in the upper house, with the total number of contested seats being 27 and 24, respectively.
This victory grants Milei a stronger mandate to continue his radical economic agenda, which he promised after his 2023 election win to combat record inflation, debt, and depleted foreign exchange reserves.
Milei had famously promised his government would act like an "electric saw" to cut "unnecessary parts" of the government. In line with this promise, his administration has recently implemented deep austerity measures, including major budget cuts to education, pensions, and infrastructure, and the layoff of thousands of government employees.
Despite widespread movements against these reforms, the government has remained resolute.
