A devastating fire at the Werdha Damai retirement home in Manado, Indonesia, has claimed the lives of 16 residents. The tragedy occurred on Sulawesi island, with local authorities confirming the death toll on Monday following the late-night blaze.
The fire broke out late Sunday night, rapidly engulfing the facility and turning the night sky orange. Footage from the scene captured the intensity of the flames as residents and bystanders scrambled to assist the elderly.
Most of the victims were elderly residents who became trapped inside the building as the fire spread. In addition to the 16 fatalities, at least three other individuals suffered significant burns and are receiving medical treatment.
Jimmy Rotinsulu, chief of the Manado fire department, noted the difficulty of the rescue due to the limited mobility of the residents. The fire was eventually extinguished late Sunday night.
Police official Alamsyah P. Hasibuan stated that an official investigation is currently active to determine the cause of the fire.
Authorities are looking into potential electrical faults or safety violations within the facility. The local community remains in shock as families await further information regarding the victims.
