A devastating bomb explosion ripped through a crowded mosque in Nigeria's north-eastern Borno State on Wednesday evening, December 24, 2025. The attack targeted worshippers gathered for evening prayers in the Gamboru market area of Maiduguri, the state capital.
While initial police reports confirmed 5 deaths, hospital and security sources have since indicated the toll has risen to at least 7–8 fatalities. Additionally, 35 people sustained various degrees of injury and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Borno State police spokesperson Nahum Daso stated that preliminary findings, including the recovery of vest fragments, suggest a suicide bombing.
The blast occurred on Christmas Eve in a city that had enjoyed relative calm for several years. No group has yet claimed responsibility, though the area is a known stronghold for Boko Haram and ISWAP militants.
Security forces have cordoned off the market area to sweep for secondary explosive devices. The incident follows a recent surge in insurgent activity in the region throughout late 2025.
