


Gopalganj Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate, Mr. Md. Arif-Uz-Zaman, visited and inspected an ongoing canal excavation and re-excavation project in Dumuria Union under Tungipara Upazila of Gopalganj district on 19 June 2026.
The project, titled “Bar Canal Excavation and Re-Excavation Project from Parjhanjhania Nizam Sheikh’s Gher to Thanda Majumdar’s Boundary,” is being implemented under the Employment Generation Program for the Poorest (EGPP), a special priority initiative of the Honorable Prime Minister, under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.
According to project officials, the canal has a total length of 1.8 kilometers, a 30-foot width at the surface, and a depth of 10 feet. During the inspection, it was reported that approximately 90 percent of the project work has already been completed. In addition, 100 trees have been planted along the project area as part of environmental conservation and greening efforts.
During the visit, the Deputy Commissioner conducted a detailed review of the overall progress of the excavation and re-excavation activities. He assessed the quality of work, implementation status, and compliance with the approved project plan. He also provided necessary instructions to the concerned officials to ensure the timely completion of the project and to enable local residents to benefit from its outcomes as quickly as possible.
Present during the inspection were Mr. Shovon Sarkar, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Gopalganj; Mr. Zahirul Alam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Tungipara; the Project Implementation Officer of Tungipara; other concerned government officials and employees; and local distinguished community members.
Officials expressed optimism that the successful implementation of the project will help alleviate waterlogging in the area and improve irrigation facilities for agricultural lands. The rehabilitated canal is also expected to support fish farming in ghers, duck rearing, vegetable cultivation, and the easier transportation of agricultural products. As a result, the project is anticipated to create employment opportunities for the local ultra-poor population and contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of the area.
