A discussion meeting marking the 19th World Autism Awareness Day was held at the Deputy Commissioner's office on Wednesday afternoon. Organized by the District Social Services Office, the event aimed to promote inclusivity and social understanding.
Deputy Commissioner Mazharul Islam attended as the chief guest, while Rubaiyat Md. Ferdous, Deputy Director of the District Social Services Office, presided over the session. Key speakers included Dr. Mahmudul Hasan, Ajmir Hossain, Abdus Samad, Mohammad Azharul Islam, and Kazi Ashraful Hasan.
Addressing the gathering of NGO leaders, persons with disabilities, and their families, speakers emphasized that autism is a developmental condition rather than a disease. While social stigma persists, they noted a significant rise in public awareness.
The speakers urged the community to adopt a compassionate and positive attitude toward children with autism. They highlighted that many globally renowned figures achieved greatness despite their diagnosis, proving that with family and societal support, children with autism can excel.
The meeting concluded with a call for collective action from all sectors of society to ensure the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
