A school teacher in Ulipur, Kurigram, has drawn public attention by creating the design of the National Memorial in a rice field.
Jafar Sadiq, an assistant teacher at Ulipur Model Government Primary School, used purple rice seedlings to form the design on his 17-bigha farmland during the current Boro season. The field is located near the Ulipur–Rajarhat road, making the design clearly visible from a distance and attracting passers-by.
Sadiq, a resident of Pub Naodanga in Ulipur municipality and son of Abu Bakkar Siddique, is known locally for combining agriculture with creative expression. This is not his first such initiative. In previous seasons, he created designs of the national flag, the map of Bangladesh, and the national flower using paddy fields.
Although teaching is his profession, agriculture remains his passion. Alongside his school duties, he cultivates his land and uses it as a medium to promote patriotism.
Several visitors, including SSC examinees Rakib Hasan, Sharif Uddin, and Aminul Islam, said they travelled to see the field. “It feels inspiring to see such a design in a paddy field. It helps the younger generation connect with the history of the Liberation War,” they said.
Local resident Abdul Malek described the initiative as a source of pride. “This kind of creativity in agriculture is truly inspiring,” he said.
Speaking about his work, Sadiq said, “Teaching is my profession, agriculture is my passion, and patriotism is my belief. I try to express that through my work.”
He added, “In school, I teach history through books. In the field, I try to present that history through the soil.”
The field now draws hundreds of visitors daily. Many stop to take photos and reflect on the country’s history. Sadiq said the public interest is the greatest reward for his effort.
